Bibliographical Society Lecture on the British Book Trade Index: 11
April 2006
John Hinks and Maureen Bell will present a paper on the British Book
Trade Index on the web. They will describe and demonstrate the resource,
discuss the research deriving from the project, and point to future
research questions which BBTI might help to address.
The Index [www.bbti.bham.ac.uk <outbind://122/www.bbti.bham.ac.uk> ],
begun by the late Professor Peter Isaac in Newcastle and subsequently
moved to Birmingham with AHRB funding, brings together brief
biographical and trade details of all those who worked in the English
and Welsh book trades before 1852. It includes not only printers,
publishers and booksellers but also other related trades, such as
stationers, papermakers, engravers, auctioneers, ink-makers and sellers
of medicines, so that the book trade can be studied in the context of
allied trades.
The presentation is at 6.00 in the Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre,
University College, Gower Street, London, on Tuesday, 11 April.
